For October 25, 2011!!!! Aside from location, is there any difference between the North and South Poles? The geographic North Pole lies at the Earths northernmost point, in the middle of the icy Arctic Ocean. The geographic South Pole, at the Earths exact opposite point, sits on the continent of Antarctica. Because the South Pole is located on a land mass, it was possible to establish a permanent station there, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. At the North Pole Russia has set up manned drifting stations. The geographic poles are located some distance from the magnetic poles, the location of which is always shifting, depending on the intensity of the Earths magnetic field. Navigator and explorer Richard E. Byrd, who is considered to be the first man to fly over both magnetic poles, was born on this date in 1888. Byrd and Floyd Bennett flew over the North Pole in 1926, and he and three others made the flight to the South Pole and back in 1929. QUOTE: Few men during their lifetime come anywhere near exhausting the resources dwelling within them. There are deep wells of strength that are never used. — Richard E.
