For Release: September 23, 2013 RE: Community Invited to Celebrate the Opening of the Alfred E. Rush Academy Florence, SC - Florence School District One announces the celebration of the opening of the Alfred Rush Academy. The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting and open house on Sunday, September 29 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The school is located at 1201 Ashby Road, Quinby, SC. After the purchase of the former Byrnes School property, the Florence School District One Board of Trustees voted that the school be named Alfred Rush Academy. Rush served two terms in the South Carolina House during reconstruction, 1868-70 and 1874-76, representing what was then Darlington County. In Florence, the historical mile marker designates where Alfred Rush was assassinated in 1876 about one-half mile from his home. Rush was also a deacon and one of the founding members of Savannah Grove Baptist Church which is located in Effingham. The Alfred Rush Academy houses three-and four-year-old Florence One Montessori* students (The Nest at AE Rush) as well as students in grades seven through twelve. These students, who have not been successful in traditional school settings, were formerly assigned to Florence One’s alternative program. Dr. Gerard Edwards said, “At the Alfred Rush Academy, our motto is Making the RIGHT Choices! It is our goal to make the right choices in the areas of academics, attendance, behavior, and community service.” Organizers for the event say that the ceremony is significant in that this school dedication ceremony is bringing together community leaders including the descendants of Alfred Rush, church leaders from the Ebenezer and Savannah Grove communities, city and county council as well as representatives from the Legislative Black Caucus. For more information, call Dr. Floyd Creech at 843-673-1129 or Dr. Gerard Edwards at 843-664-4156.
