For Venice folks -- The next Venice homeless sweep (clean up) by LAPD is this Friday morning April 25 and we could use a few volunteer legal observers. During these sweeps personal possessions of the homeless are frequently targeted and illegally confiscated under the guise of street cleaning. Please reply if you are able to meet Atty Carol Sobel on the Boardwalk at Rose Ave at 6:15am. Bring a video camera/phone with video capability. Just in case you missed the recent Legal Observer Training, below are some tips by the Venice Justice Committee: 1. Do not talk to police or city agents - only by exception. 2. Document any incidents: a) Take pictures or video and get copy of tickets. b) Get names, business cards, number on side of police car, descriptions of police/city agents involved. c) Get witness or victim statements and contact info. d) Write down your own statement. e) Try to not become part of the incident or get arrested. If they say to step back, use your own judgment on how far, but you have a right to document. 3. Please send reports and pictures to the VJC. We decide to make media once when we know it is not evidence. The copwatch rule of thumb is to not give out any media that might harm the people you are trying to help.
