For a little while, I stopped reading social media posts about the dispute between the #bctf and the government. It was frustrating, anxiety-inducing, and depressing. I know first hand how it feels to hear its all about the money, get back to work, youre always on strike, you have enough resources, you dont need technology, teach the basics, among so much more. Step foot in a classroom. Step foot in my classroom, I will welcome you. Meet my kids, work with them, help them, talk to them about what they go through. I am not just a teacher. I am a caregiver. I am a mother/father/grandmother/grandfather/aunt/uncle/sister. I am a therapist. I am a first aide attendant. I am a mediator. I am a listener. I am a negotiator. I work my ass off every day, and I dont do it for me. There are times I spend time attending to my work related work instead of being able to fully play with my own daughter. I sacrifice. I buy supplies, resources, food, and other items for my classroom, out of pocket. I volunteer. I didnt get into the profession to make a bunch of money. I got into the profession to make a difference in lives and education. Im expected to do that to the best degree, with less and less every year. When I started teaching nearly a decade ago, I had an idea of what I was getting into - at the time. That has changed dramatically over the years so when people say now that I need to play the cards Im dealt with - that metaphor is incorrect because what Im working with now, what kids go through, what I have available to me, is so incredibly different that it is unfair and wrong to do so. The government has money but the government also has priorities. I cant speak for others but I dont want to live in a world full of idiots. People, generally, are a product of what theyre exposed to and through EDUCATION, we can right wrongs, and then a have a fully functioning, well-rounded society where everyone contributes their strengths in a positive manner. But this starts with EDUCATION. Education is the foundation to everything we know and everything we have yet to learn. The times now to get a fair, negotiated deal. Dont drag this out any longer. Its frustrating for everyone involved and frankly, everyone who isnt involved but is a member of the community. Cmon government #christyclark #fassbender #bcgovt, step up to the plate. #bced #bcpoli
