For a period of seven days, House Speaker Wade Mark will act as President and head of State of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. President Anthony Carmona is scheduled to pay a State visit to the Vatican city and will be travelling from July 4th to 10th. The President is due to meet Pope Francis at 11 a.m. on July 6th. It will be Carmona’s first overseas engagement since assuming office as President. President of the Senate, Timothy Hamel-Smith, who under the Constitution is second in line and usually acts for the President, is also overseas on a family vacation. During the seven days, Mark would be endowed with all the powers of the Head of State. His duties of Speaker will be performed by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Neela Khan.
