For a while now, Ive been wanting to write about succession especially as I ruminate on the recent woes of Manchester United FC(Man U). The case in Burkina Faso is bringing that out...SUCCESSION IN LEADERSHIP.Alexander Chapman Ferguson who coached Man U for 26 years is regarded as one of the most successful, admired and respected managers in the history of the football game. During his years at the club, he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League and two UEFA Champions League titles. WOW!There has been a serious dent in this achievement as per his succession. I hope you remember that a success without a successor is a failure and so Sir Alex is like one. Please dont crucify me. Though Im a Gunner (by mouth), I have a most profound respect for him and by many standards-he is a hero. My take is just on his successor. I wonder why he didnt begin to groom say a Ryan Giggs, 5-10 years ago-allowing him coach in some games he could afford to loose etc.In my podcast and post, Ive stated 7 most important stuffs about a leader...Im tempted to add an 8th and that is; the most important ACHIEVEMENT/CONTRIBUTION in LEADERSHIP is a (greater) SUCCESSOR.In fact, I strongly recommend that one plans his/her succession the day s/he assumes leadership. Begin with the end in mind is what Steve R. Covey calls it. This is key! Ive been having a range of argument with a man I refer to as my online mentor (Pastor B...lol) regarding the happenings in Burkina Faso and Africa at large. My take has been that weve gotta change this pattern. Its not all about you. The vision must be bigger than you. It must outlive you. Listen friend, its high time you put your succession cap on...AFRICALets close with a thought from Dr. Myles Munroe: the first act of a visionary leader like you should be to identify and begin mentoring your replacement.Live deliberately and be all YOU CAN!Niyi SoyinkaSuccess Katalyst
