For all of you who read my last post regarding Imitation of Life, this is actress Fredi Washington. She portrayed Peola in the 1934 version of the film. If only what could have been. I respect this beautiful woman because during a time when Hollywood would not recognize black talent in its mainstream, she was given the opportunity to have mainstream success at the price of not acknowledging her identity as a black woman. She gave up Hollywood because her identity meant more to her than material success. Not an easy decision to make but a highly respectable one. To me at least.
