For all the emphasis put on STAYING POSITIVE OMG I feel like we overlook the implicit fact that what we really want to do is reduce/minimize negative thoughts, since then, whatevers left is naturally positive (or neutral). This is a slight but important distinction. Think about it: adding more water to the ocean wont do anything to change the pesky slick lurking above (and below). We have to address the negativity. We cant run from it, ignore it, try to overpower or dilute it. We can, however, learn how to dissolve it. Positivity does NOT do this. They are opposite energies (like oil and water) they will not blend. What we need is a solvent. Are you ready? Neutrality. If you can change your attitude towards negative thoughts (and their reasons) to neutral listening--notice I didnt say reacting--you begin diffusing their energy. Reason being: negative thoughts, emotions (and reasons) RELY on our fear, avoidance and discrimination for their power. Stop playing their game by listening patiently in a neutral, non-judgemental, allowing way (like you would with a friend) and they wither. This wont happen overnight but its real, lasting progress. Think of cleaning up an actual oil spill. It takes applied, sustained effort. The main pitfall of this technique is losing sight of this simple formula. When we spend a lifetime reacting to negativity, we often must patiently retrain ourselves to be vigilant and interrupt the habit when it starts to act up again. Dont run, dont diminish them and dont let yourself get caught-up in all the reasons why negative thoughts might be right or justified. Dont get reeled into the same old arguments. Negativity is mendacious, enervating, small-minded, self-defeating energy. You dont need it. Bottom line. Just listen, be neutral, academic. Learn to feel for charges (+/=/-) instead of explanations. Charges wont steer you wrong.
