For all those people asking about Ericas condition of why she lost - TopicsExpress

For all those people asking about Ericas condition of why she lost her voice for 3 months it is quite normal and happens to kids in puberty during growth spurts. She gave us simple vocal exercises to help us if it happens again to loosen the muscles but if this doesnt work to come back to her for another speech therapy session Ericas condition, called functional dysphonia, is caused when the muscles that control the vocal cords tighten up and lock. In Ericas case, the vocal cords were locked in an open position so that the air from her lungs simply passed over but not across the vocal cords themselves, so they were unable to vibrate and produce sound. Its like any muscle if you hold your hand tightly clenched in a fist for a long period of time your muscle tighten and get tensed up and are hard to open. This is what happened to Ericas muscles that control her vocal cords By massaging and relaxing the muscles in her throat and doing several simple vocal exercises, Ericas speech therapist was able to release the vocal cords and allow Erica to speak again — all in about seven minutes.
