For almost two days the Cochin Airport was blocked by flooding of Runway and terminal.. Good symptom. The MD of CIAL( Cochin International Airport Ltd.) claims that it was wonderful to drain the area in short time. But he should admit that it was possible only because the rain had stopped for 12 hours. It was only some shutters of one small dam opened for this flooding. If more dams ( like Idukki) opens what will be the condition of this airport? If it rains bit more ? MD was telling even in 1976 when Idukki dam opened ther was no flood. Very interesting. That time it was all paddy field. Now it is Runway, terminal, hotels and Golf Club for poor people.. Some journalist asked whether it is due to the fact that the whole airport is built up reclaiming paddy field? He evaded the question. Also the Chengal thode which is draining water to Periyar was also closed and partially reclaimed. Nobody will talk about it. Now it is a lesson for those who are trying to construct airports at Aranmula, Anakkara ( Idukki) and Cheekkalloor( Wayanadu) where it is planned to reclaim paddy field and wetlands. Even those who fight against the Aranmula airport will not raise this issue because they all have a role in the Cochin airport.
