For any of you who follow the works of that leading twentieth-century French philosopher and commentator on modernity, Michel Foucault, did you know about his interest in Jan Jonston (1603-75), Polish intellectual of Scottish parentage? Foucault saw Jonston as a leading figure in the development of natural history and wrote the following in a book first published in 1966: In 1657, Jonston published A Natural History of Quadrapeds. This date of birth is, of course, not absolutely definitive; it is there only to signify a landmark, to indicate, from afar, the apparent enigma of an event.
