For as long as I can remember, Andrew James loved picking on my dad, Dwight Michael. My dad would sometimes try to retaliate, but rarely succeeded. However, there was one story in which he was able to at least draw a little silence from Andy, involving my then 3-year-old brother beginning a few bars too early while our church congregation sang Go Tell It On The Mountain. The night before Andys wedding, my dad delivered a knockout father-of-the-groom speech at the rehearsal dinner. When asked for an encore, he tried to tell this very inside-joke story to a room full of people who couldnt have understood the scene or its comedic value even if theyd been shown a video. When the laugh never came, Dwight improvised, singing a remix of the hymn. Go tell it on the mountain, that Andy and Lauren are getting married. It was heartfelt. It was adorable. It was at least mildly embarrassing. In the jab-slinging saga of Dwight vs. Andy warfare, my brother has been armed to the teeth, a 21st century Rambo riding a drone with teleportation modifications. Hes been combating a Zimbabwean archer in a loin cloth. By becoming part of the folklore of Andys adorable embarrassment, Dwight handed Andy his only arrow. With Dwights permission, I present to you a round sung five minutes prior to Andys wedding, commemorating Dwights laying down of arms. In this family, we tease because we love.
