For centuries, countries have raised militaries for the primary purpose of protecting their countries sovereignty and territorial integrity. But today, militaries are increasingly (being) called upon to deal with transnational security challenges related to terrorism, drug and human trafficking, counter-proliferation, natural disasters, biological pandemics and cyber security, said Dr Ng in his keynote speech at the 3rd Putrajaya Forum in Kuala Lumpur, with the theme of Strengthening Security and Regional Stability. In his speech, Dr Ng also described three ways in which countries could prepare their militaries to take on these evolving challenges - leverage technology to improve information and intelligence collection; enhance civil-military cooperation; and strengthen regional military cooperation and coordination through joint exercises. As part of his trip, Dr Ng also met Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Malaysian Defence Minister Dato Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
