For decades, groups and individuals have criticized Wisconsin’s school-funding system because it is too complicated. For example, gimmicks and twists to fix specific problems only uncover other challenges. Most recently, State School Superintendent Tony Evers and Senator Luther Olsen, a Berlin Republican who represents the 14th District and is chair of the Senate Committee on Education, tweaked the formula to try and help school districts with above average expenditures for school busing. It was a good faith effort to disburse about $5 million in new aid to districts with transportation costs exceeding 150 percent of the statewide per-student average. Well, surprise, surprise ….. guess who’s also on the list? Fox Point-Bayside, Glendale-River Hills, and Maple Dale-Indian Hill, three wealthy and compact North Shore Milwaukee districts, received $71,000, $97,000 and $67,000, respectively. The district they feed into for high school, Nicolet Union High School District, received just under $80,000.
