For everyone hating on the Ice Bucket Challenge: How many of you - TopicsExpress

For everyone hating on the Ice Bucket Challenge: How many of you were talking about/passionate about/researching ALS last week? Aside from the theatrics, (and this is coming from someone WORKING in a non-profit), this movement demonstrates the sheer POWER in a well run Ponzi scheme. I really, REALLY hope that everyone who participated donated, because thats the ultimate objective, AND what is going to bring about tangible change, but this fun incentive has successfully drawn awareness and visibility to a serious debilitating disease that (lets face it) the majority of us didnt acknowledge just a few short weeks ago. Didnt Google it. Didnt care about. Period. And now its EVERYWHERE. Yes, the popularity of the challenge may overshadow the cause in some cases, but you can not argue with the fact that this campaign has raised $1.35 MILLION IN 2 WEEKS. PLUS, people feel like they participated in something special and silly..... why harsh on that? Seriously? I would rather watch THOUSANDS of videos of strangers and celebrities having FUN with this than the horrific photos and videos people share on the daily to remind us how regressive we are as opposed to progressive. Yesterday someone shared a video of a greyhound being held up by its hind legs and kicked in the stomach. And another of an autistic boy being beaten at a party. An elephant with its face sawed off. Choose to be outraged at something that deserves such a vehement reaction , and celebrate something that outshines the negativity. It may be stupid and not your thing. But its powerful. And its working. #iceicebaby nj/opinion/index.ssf/2014/08/you_dont_have_to_hate_the_ice_bucket_challege_editorial.html
