Reasons Why People Stay in Abusive Relationships By Kristen James From the outside, people might wonder why a person stays in an unhealthy relationship. Understanding their reasons for staying might enable you to help them leave if the relationship is dangerous or abusive. Recognizing Abuse Some people may not understand that certain behaviors are abuse. Some people might not recognize verbal abuse--they simply accept and believe the mean things said to them. Emotional abuse includes put downs, name calling, or making a person feel guilty over something out of their control. It can even be hard to identify physical abuse; if a person slaps another once in a while, it still qualifies as abuse. Codependent One person needs the approval of the other--they are afraid of making the other person mad. In an abusive relationship, the codependent person is afraid that leaving will make the other mad. Through put downs and other abuse, the victim feels they need the other person because no one else will love them, they cant make it on their own or will fail. The abusive person might tell them that no one else will put up with them. Low Self-Esteem Often, the abusive person tears the other down verbally. If a person feels that no one else will love them, or that they are stupid or ugly, they feel afraid to be alone or look for another partner. Real Dependence Its scary for people to leave a relationship that supports them financially. A stay-at-home mom can feel she has no way to support herself, and perhaps her children, if she leaves. This can be true for handicapped or otherwise dependent people. Beliefs Some people think their family will disapprove of a separation or divorce, or they believe its wrong to leave a marriage even if its abusive.
