For many low-income groups, ecological damage is both a cause and an effect of their poverty. For example, they may carry on taking fuel wood from degraded forests because they are not connected to the electricity network and cannot afford kerosene or gas. As they are forced to work their land or pasture even harder to earn income for their basic needs, they enter a vicious circle of increasing degradation and increasing poverty.
