For many years first Michigan, then Montana, then Arizona were among the biggest copper miners in the world (Michigan still has the worlds best at 99.4% pure out of the ground instead of smelted, refined, etc., its why its been mined for 4,500 years.) Bolivia (Potosi), Chile, Peru, and Argentina have been the growth sources of copper the past few decades while Hungary, Poland, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan (potentially), Mongolia, Indonesia, Thailand (coppers been mined there perhaps 15,000 years and bronze may well have been invented there as its the only place with alluvial tin deposits on the surface near surface copper deposits.) Coppers a great indicator of overall economic growth since copper wiring is present in electronics, buildings, cars, planes, appliances, etc. and copper pipes remain a staple for moving water within buildings (turns out copper has antibiotic properties so it actually cleans somewhat the water.) Montana had literally hundreds of copper mines other than the Butte pit, scattered throughout Southwestern Montana and ended by Anaconda Coppers clout as often as the natural way mines stop.
