For me, the best directors share two traits: first, they understand the visual nature of film, and the way that our visual set communicates with our other senses. They recognize that we have visceral, physical responses to textures. And so they are in love with textures. Equally important, however, is that they understand that story and character come first, that we need not only things to look at, but people to connect with on an emotional level. We need to care. We need to believe that the donkey is solid marble, not merely a very pretty, but hollow, pinata. This is why David Lynch and Joss Whedon, to me, are geniuses. This is also why, despite his high reputation among directors, critics, and the culture at large, Stanley Kubrick remains, in my eyes, a hack.
