Public Information Statement Statement as of 6:49 PM EDT on July 24, 2013 ...Tornado and downburst confirmed on July 23 2013... ...Carroll and Columbiana tornado... location...2 miles NNE Norristown to 1 mile E Five Forks date...23 July 2013 estimated time...522 to 528 PM EDT maximum ef-scale rating...EF0 estimated maximum wind speed...75 mph maximum path width...75 yards path length...3.2 miles beginning lat/Lon...40.694n / 80.943w ending lat/Lon...40.663n /80.899w * fatalities...0 * injuries...0 * the information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event(s) and publication in NWS storm data. ...Summary... the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh PA has confirmed an EF-0 tornado that began in Carroll County Ohio and ended in Columbiana County in eastern Ohio. Damage throughout the path of the tornado was confined primarily to snapped or uprooted Hardwood and softwood trees. The damage path began near the intersection of Apollo and merline roads...where the metal roof of a grain silo was removed and an open small barn was unroofed. The metal roof of the barn was transported 50 yards toward the southwest...counter to the storm motion. Tree damage was discovered at a residence along marigold Road. At this location...a trampoline was wrapped around a power pole... and a metal television antenna had been removed by the wind and could not be found. Along nature Road...a concentrated cluster of uprooted and snapped trees was observed. This path continued to a line of trees along Lewis Road...where damage became very sparse. Outside of the convergent damage path...a one-mile wide swath of widespread tree damage was noted...and slate shingles of two barns were removed and impaled into the ground. This damage likely was the result of straight-line rear-flank downdraft wind not directly the result of the tornado. This swath exhibited a more divergent debris pattern. Damage was consistent with maximum wind gusts of 70 to 75 mph. This tornado was rated EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Appreciation is extended to the Carroll County emergency management agency and the public for their assistance with this damage survey. ...Columbiana County downburst... location...1 mile NNE East Liverpool Ohio date...23 July 2013 estimated time...518 to 520 PM EDT estimated maximum wind speed...80 to 90 mph downburst lat/Lon center...40.644n / 80.561w * fatalities...0 * injuries...2 * the information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event(s) and publication in NWS storm data. ...Summary... the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh PA has confirmed a downburst in the vicinity of East Liverpool Ohio on 23 July 2013. Divergent damage to trees was observed in Thompson Park...likely the center of the downburst. Widespread snapped or uprooted trees were seen throughout the area...some falling on houses. The most concentrated tree damage was noted along cheval Ave and Dewey Ave extension. The debris pattern fanned out downhill to the southeast in the direction of storm motion. The damage was consistent with maximum wind gusts of 80 to 90 mph. Although the damage was caused by straight-line wind...the wind was comparably strong to some weak tornadoes. Two injuries were reported. One injury occurred when a tree fell on a vehicle. A second occurred as a driver struck a fallen tree. Appreciation is extended to the Columbiana County emergency management agency...the East Liverpool Fire Department and the public for their assistance with this damage survey. For reference...the Enhanced Fujita scale classifies wind damage into the following categories: EF0...wind speeds 65 to 85 mph. EF1...wind speeds 86 to 110 mph. EF2...wind speeds 111 to 135 mph. EF3...wind speeds 136 to 165 mph. EF4...wind speeds 166 to 200 mph. EF5...wind speeds greater than 200 mph.
