For my fellow literature nerds. "In the books most often cited as candidates for the Great American Novel, male characters — Jay Gatsby, Huckleberry Finn, Ahab — have played that role, representatives, presumably, of the American experience. But (and do I really even need to say it at this stage?), the notion that a female figure might serve the same purpose undermines the very concept of the Great American Novel. Men are allowed to stand for the entirety of a national identity or for humanity itself, but women are only supposed to stand for womanhood, if in various flavors."
