For my friends who are not involved with animal rescue, here is a great video showing how scared a dog from a puppy mill or hoarding situation can be due to lack of socialization with humans. The ASPCA has a facility where they work with dogs like this so they can be adopted. Most rescues are foster-based, so these dogs go into homes where they learn to overcome their fear of humans, and that there are rewards to companionship. This dogs rehab was extremely quick. Many dogs take months or years to become less fearful--and most will never be quite like a normal, well-socialized dog. So if youve ever been in my little ex-hoarder dog, Pippins unwelcoming presence, youll understand him better and maybe even forgive him. :)
