For my last post of the year, Im remembering a talented but less remembered artist from the soul/R&B world that we lost in 2014: Deon Jackson. His record I Cant Go On was released in 1968 on the Carla label, but did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (although it may have reached the R&B chart). Jacksons biggest hits were Love Makes the World Go Round and Ooh Baby in 1967. The Ann Arbor native was discovered by Ollie McLaughlin, who signed him to Detroit-based Carla Records, where he had a few minor hits. Jackson later moved to Chicago, where he occasionally sang in clubs until his death on April 18. To me, Jackson represents what I enjoy about the music I love most: A small-time but talented singer who had his moment in the limelight, but never hit it really big, and went into obscurity, but not before recording some great tracks that are worth recalling -- and that enrich my life. RIP Deon, thank you for the music. youtube/watch?v=_fvchcnESDQ
