For our School teachers & Madrasah Ustaadhs ....... Discipline and Control: When disciplining a learner, the teacher should refrain from becoming a dictator. A rule is not to be followed because I say so but because it is the right thing to do. Talk to your learners often about why you set rules and enforce certain laws. Inspire them with stories of great characters, through books and verbal narration. Do not allow the learners to fear you. Allow them to share their views sometimes even if you do not agree with them. Hear them out and then explain why you think they need to be corrected. When it comes to teaching children, the power of words cannot be overestimated. The lash of the tongue on the heart of a child can have devastating and lasting consequences. “You stupid little idiot!” “Can’t you do anything right?” “You are totally useless!” Words live and breathe and grow in our hearts until they either bear life-giving fruit…comfort, security, confidence … or fester into infectious, oozing wounds…despondency, anxiety, rage. Children learn what they live. Just as violence begets violence, so angry teachers tend to result in angry learners. And teachers who ridicule tend to produce sarcastic learners and critical teachers tend to generate negative learners. The fact is that hurting children is unacceptale. Children taught with condemnation in whatever form it takes is a serious crime. Words matter. They matter desperately…as desperate as a five-year-old is to hear she’s good, as desperate as a ten-year-old is to hear he’s smart, as desperate as a fifteen-year-old is to hear she’s valuable. The truth is that we all make mistakes. We all say the wrong thing sometimes. Teachers! choose your words wisely, carefully, thoughtfully. Your learners futures depend on it. May Allah reward you abundantly for your efforts & sacrifice. You are in a Noble profession yet little appreciated.
