For our upcoming 30th anniversary issue of American Songwriter Magazine, instead of dedicating my Icons column to a single songwriter as I usually do, I wrote this one on lessons learned about being a songwriter in modern times. This is for all my fellow songwriters - all of you! This is for the next issue in print, but sharing here online as a special New Years gift to all songwriters and lovers of song. Lou Reed told me he heard songs all the time in the permanent radio broadcast going on in his head. He then said journalists make fun of those kinds of statements. I said, sure, journalists, maybe, but not songwriters. He said, No, of course, not songwriters! By which he meant, of course, all of us. Those of us who do this every day, year after year, through the hard times and easy times, we get it. This is for you.
