For several years now, the Chagrin River has slowly eroded away the bank along the river bed that supports the section of bridle trail just north of Old Field in the South Chagrin reservation. This section of trail is highly used by horseback riders, joggers, hikers and walkers. This year, the river forced our hand. Given the frequent usage, and the severity of the erosion, we decided to go ahead with plans to reroute the trail. After consulting with our Risk Management team, and working with Natural Resources, we mapped out a path that redirected users through a stand of pine trees that enhances the users’ experience. To ensure that no one used the original trail, Natural Resources dropped a pine tree that was failing, onto the existing trail. The new trail offers a greater sense of security, without taking away from the esthetics of the trail – perhaps even adding to the beauty. A great example of collaborative efforts between our Park Operations, Risk Management and Natural Resources departments. ~Shamar Young, Park Manager South Chagrin Reservation
