For so long, jobs and security have come to me so easily that when employment is gone due to school, and youre down to pennies with 2-months of backed up cell phone bills and credit card companies on your butt, you really realize how valuable even a part time minimum wage job can be. I feel for everyone who is having a hard time this holiday season, especially those with families to feed. Its a sad world where hardship is looked upon as worthlessness and success is evaluated based on ability and persuasion. It comes to a point where you really cant feel comfortable accepting anything from those who try to help, because the world trains us to understand dependence as weakness. That isnt right. What sort of world is this where someone has to feel ashamed instead of empowered and thankful for gifts of financial help? Students are squeezed like sponges and hounded for years to come for their money that they potentially make from their prospective careers after slaving in poverty and emotional strain for 3-4 years or more and learning dick all to show for it. Right now Im at a point of needing to sell almost everything I own, including textbooks that I still need for next semester, just to be able to support myself into the new year. Post secondary is referred to as being the best years of your life, but have so far this year, damaged my entire emotional resonance, driven me deep below the poverty line, and have shown as a waste of my time and money in some sad attempt at becoming a productive member of society. Im here studying income security and how to help people succeed in the social services, yet Im there myself. On the verge of yet another mental breakdown, not enough in the bank to even make a withdrawal, and too ashamed to ask for help. Its nobodys fault, and no ones responsibility but my own. I know and understand that. I hope that this post can help some of you to feel less alone this season. I love you all. Happy holidays.
