For some high school students, the idea of lost learning time might be cause for celebration, but thats not the case for a group of Los Angeles students who recently joined a lawsuit over what they feel is a deprivation of quality education. Due to a combination of frequent teacher turnover and chaotic scheduling, public school students across California say theyve been turned away from classes required for graduation or college prep. With required classes full, they instead end up in classes theyve passed multiple times, or in home or service periods that include little academic instruction. In hopes of alleviating the issue for this fall semester, an Alameda County judge ordered immediate intervention by state officials at one L.A. high school earlier this month.
