For some reason, the next door neighbor’s yard hasn’t been - TopicsExpress

For some reason, the next door neighbor’s yard hasn’t been mowed all season. We are not sure why. I thought about it and several other homes around the county that have been let go this rainy spring and summer that are usually well maintained and very beautiful. In this case, the grass is as tall as a car hood and you can see nothing but the mobile home above the underpinning. No life, no activity – just sitting in the elements. There could be a thousand reasons for this – the owner could be in the hospital or somewhere ill, in jail or even passed on (we hope nothing like this has happened, of course). We have no way to find out. It could be they have other interests that they feel are more pressing and do know they did own another residence at one time. Despite the reason, it sits in stark contrast to the surrounding homes with nicely mowed yards, toys for all ages in the driveways and yards and pretty landscaping. As my son and I talked about it while shooting hoops this afternoon, I told him it reminds me of how our lives don’t really need any help to become unkempt. We don’t have to trash ourselves or actively seek our own decline. All it really takes is neglect. Sin takes care of the rest. Just quit maintaining our prayer life, stop fellowshipping with others, leave the bible to gather dust – and all too soon we too will find our walk with God choked out – not actively, but passively. It’s amazing how a glance in the next yard over can speak to us about priority. It’s work – just like marriage or the pursuit of excellence or any other thing of value – to keep our spiritual compass pointed in the right direction. I am reminded once again today not to neglect my faith and let the tares of this life slowly but surely choke out the things of greatest value.
