For some reason unknown to me Ive had more than a normal amount of coaches/PTs asking my advice on building a career in the fitness industry, getting good results with clients, hell a couple have even asked to do an internship with me for a week (I dont offer that though). The thing is, I feel like I have still have SO much to learn. Of course I do. Having said that, I help get people in great shape (if they will work for it!!) and Ive been fortunate enough to do some cool things like my current book project with Mens Fitness magazine, go abroad to train an actor (not for me though) and ultimately build my own business. So I cant sit here and tell to do x, y and z because it would be silly of me. Theres people I look up to, who you should be asking. BUT, I will give you some basic pointers - 1. Be humble and willing to learn from those with mountains of experience (by this I mean who regularly get results). So many coaches have come, become arrogant and big mouthed and have locked themselves out of many opportunities (like appearing in magazines unless they paid for adverts etc) by conducting themselves in a less than professional or likeable manner. Learn, be humble, be real, dont be a t***! It wont get you anywhere, even if people initially take notice of your controversial side. In terms of learning - Ive been privileged to learn from some of the worlds best. And I still do. I made it my business to. The older guys always have more wisdom too because they dont tend to have such an ego/chip on their shoulder. People I would recommend you learn off are (to name a few) - Neil Hill Nick Mitchell Phil Learney Ben Coomber Dr. Dan Reardon Callum Gore John Meadows Scott Francis (All have their own strengths) For starters. These are some of the best! My own coach, Joe Binley (who isnt a coach as such, he does it for the love) is super clever too. So learn from his stuff, and brand Anabolic Designs. I always find the best coaches have had to go through hard stuff themselves too. Someone whos ectomorphic, 20-25 and has a hint of muscle with a 6 pack probably isnt the one to teach you how to get lean. (IMO!). By this I mean, they wont necessarily appreciate the struggle of getting lean some others have. (Not all of course) 2. Practise what you preach. So get yourself in decent shape (you dont need to be like Mr. O) be real though. Dont BS people your this or that, its very transparent. 3. Get results. One of my business mentors, Paul Mort made a superb point the other day. He pointed out that a lot of coaches who try and p*** on other coaches, by debunking their theory with studies usually have less real life proof of their own results. I.E they dont have many before/after shots of their clients. And its true. (If you have time to tweet other coaches arguing your showing the world how slow business is too lol!!) End of the day, to be recognised as good you need to get results. Do you think Mrs. Watson gives a s*** about what study your quoting? No, she cares about results. End of. So get people in shape and people will come to you. I barely do any advertising at all, and turn people away now. Just always remember, social media likes/followers and arguments dont win you business or money. If you are good at what you do, you dont need to justify yourself to someone whos trying to argue with you. Let them waste their time, carry on building your future ;-)!! 4. Be smart. Wheres your niche? Know who you are talking to. The mens fitness mag is largely my demographic. So doing a book with them, and getting clients in there (without paying to be in there might I add ;-)) and writing for them is good for me. 5. Network! Get to awesome events like BodyPower, connect with like minded people, go to seminars (put on by good coaches) and if you want to get in the magazines for them a reason to feature you. Prove yourself. Ultimately, be good at what you do, be humble, dont be an arse, when success begins to happen dont get ahead of yourself, surround yourself with good people and hustle hard!! Is this any help?
