For someone who has been in the Senate for so long as an Independent, Bernie Sanders isnt that insightful. His statement here is incorrect. The primary (not the same word as mostly) cause of the US debt is the lack of any definition, measure, metric, or system in government legitimacy. Any useful definition of government legitimacy would have to include fiscal limits and prevention of self-serving actions. Politicians who use and abuse other peoples money will continue to do so more and more until there are negative repercussions greater than the gains. Franklin D. Roosevelt ran up big debts, and got re-elected twice. Ronald Reagan ran up big debts and got re-elected. George W. Bush ran up big debts and got re-elected (and his hand-in-the-sock-puppet, Karl Rove infamously and stupidly said, Deficits dont matter). Barack Hussein Obama ran up big deficits and still got re-elected. The lesson is not lost on any of the 10,000 sociopaths who think they should be president and plan to run for office: no need to be thrifty or have a balanced budget. Just borrow the money from anyone and everyone.
