For strong bone health, start early before it’s too late! Most people never thought of having a good bone health until midlife or later, which is too to do very much to protect against serious bone issues or fractures. Research showed that in order to have strong bones, one should start in childhood and continue through adolescence. During this period it is the best time for bone development. There are also 2 factors that greatly influence bone mass – physical activity & bone-building nutrients (calcium & vitamin D). Dr Scofield urged that exercise is important as well as having sufficient calcium-rich foods (eg diary products, canned salmon & sardines with bones). If children are not getting enough calcium from their diet, it is recommended to take a calcium supplement with vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed for the body to absorb and utilize dietary calcium. Most vitamin D is obtained when skin is exposed to sunlight, but the widespread use of potent sunscreens has greatly reduced this source, so a supplement may be essential.
