For the Left, Carol Hanisch’s mantra “the personal is political” still holds true, as seen in movements for racial, gender and orientation equality. Their politics are an extension of their identity, their struggle for rights and recognition deeply personal. Cartoonist Henry Payne observes that many of the Right’s concerns on the other hand are more externalized — identity is tied up in consumption, paranoia and property. One may add such abstract concepts as “freedom” and “are troops” as further aggregates of this identity; you could easily imagine a yellow ribbon or American flag sticker in the window of this car. It’s clear then who the “values voters” truly are. A good cartoon.
