TWO Executive Director Wayne Besen’s Statement On Michele Bachmann’s Announced Departure From Congress Wayne Besen May 29, 2013 Truth Wins Out Executive Director Wayne Besen’s statement: “We are gratified that Michele Bachmann announced today that she will not be returning to Congress. She has degraded this venerable institution and played a leading role in causing polarization and paralysis. Her brand of politics will not be missed and the nation’s capital will be a better, more productive place when she returns home. Truth Wins Out is proud to have helped expose the mendacity and mean-spiritedness of the Bachmann family. Fortunately, we did so at the very moment that the stars aligned and she was inexplicably considered a plausible Republican nominee for president. After a solid debate performance, Bachamnn was riding high and improving in the polls. As she flirted with frontrunner status, questions were beginning to be asked about Bachmann & Associates, her husband Marcus’ Christian counseling clinic. Reporters started calling TWO and inquiring whether reparative therapy (aka “ex-gay”) was occurring within his clinic. I made a strategic decision in June 2011 to definitively answer that question and devised a game plan to infiltrate his clinic with a TWO staffer. Thanks to some generous donors and supporters, we were able to take action. We outfitted our operative with state-of-the-art cameras and recording devices so he would be able to successfully determine whether Bachmann’s clinic worked to “pray away the gay” – which Bachmann had previously denied. Thankfully, our mission was successful and we were able to impart to the world that Marcus had lied to the American people, and that his clinic took-part in “ex-gay” quackery. The result of our investigation, which we broke in The Nation magazine and ABC World News, created a sizable speed bump that helped break Michele’s momentum – and her campaign never recovered, largely to a series of self-inflicted gaffes. It turns out her political career never revived either. Instead of a bright future, Bachmann will return to the Minnesota suburbs a diminished figure most notable for infusing extremism into politics, expounding on bizarre conspiracy theories, and diminishing the stature of Washington.
