For the first time in its history, the Kansas Supreme Court will hold a session on the Pittsburg State University campus. From 9 a.m. to noon today, the court will hear oral arguments in four appeals in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall in McCray Hall. The public may come and go during the court session, but should anticipate strict security measures. The justices are coming to PSU as part of its public outreach program in which the court holds dockets outside of Topeka so that the general public and students can learn about the justices — who they are, what they do, and how they do it. The session also will highlight the differences between a trial at the local district court and oral arguments in the appeals process. Those attending will hear arguments in three civil cases (employment/independent contractor, wrongful death, and eminent domain), as well as one criminal case (Jessica’s law).
