For the last couple weeks, Ive had an unhealthy obsession with The New Basement Tapes. If youre a fan of Elvis Costello, Mumford and Sons, Dawes, My Morning Jacket or Bob Dylan and you havent checked this out, do it. A little bit about what it is: They uncovered some old Bob Dylan notes for unfinished song ideas that he wrote while he was hiding out from public life in Woodstock, NY in the late 60s. In a seven month period, he wrote something like 150 songs and spent a lot playing and recording with The Band. T Bone Burnett, who played with Dylan and has won about a dozen Grammys - a bunch for the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack and the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss album from a couple years ago, helped these guys finish/re-imagine Dylans notes & songs and record an album in two weeks. Showtime released a documentary about the project thats a pretty amazing glimpse into the creative process.
