For the last many days the media has been carrying news about the high prices of onions in Delhi,Mumbai etc. .Besides the weather the reason for this is hoarding by the big traders for profiteering.In a nation where social commitments are weak,laws to curb such activities non-existent and administrative apathy and collusion with the wrong-doer a fact of life people will have to devise means to punish the profiteer,blackmarketeer and law-breaker.This type of direct democracy and enforcement of social responsibility can be very non-violent and very effective.In the case of onions we must remember that onion will start sprouting after a month and will lose its value.Besides,fresh arrivals and spring onions will also become available.As such what the consumer needs to do is to reduce his purchase to the minimum for the time being.This will teach the hoarders a good lesson. Another suggestion especially useful for urban consumers is to grow onions as well as vegetables in flower-pots.This will provide them fresh supply,reduce dependence on market and give them a tool to influence market price.Such an experiment has been carried out in Havana(Cuba) and is eminently successful.We can repeat the same in India and give a fitting reply to the unscrupulous trader.
