For the more inquisitive people, here is the full story :) Packing prices... theyre going up, but why? The packing price issue is something thats been on the committees mind for a while now. Over the past ten years (probably longer) the jump ticket price has gone up and up... and up. However the packing price has not followed suit. There were times when a packer could do 5 pack jobs and afford to do a jump. At the current prices (R320 a jump and R40 a pack job) this equates to 8 pack jobs to the jump ticket. Its not really appealing at that high a ratio. Instead of deciding on the packing price on an ad hoc basis, as has been the case up until now, the committee has decided to fix it at a ratio meaning the packing price would move up, or down, relative to the jump ticket price. To start of, weve set this ratio at 6.5, however the ratio can be adjusted as required should it be warranted. NB. The packing price relates to packing student/club gear and NOT sport (private) gear. The club does not regulate sport packing, it is something that is a private deal between the sport jumper and the packer. On that note the club will also in future stop administering payment for sport packing. Anyway back to the point, a ratio of 6.5 at the current jump prices equates to R50 a pack job. What does this mean? For one it means that student jump prices will go up. Now before you start throwing your arms up in protest think about what this really means. Firstly the majority of student pack jobs are for students on the First Jump Course - an increase of R10 in the course fee will mean nothing here. Now what about the students on progression? For the student for whom money is not an issue they can pay an extra R10 per jump, but for those to whom it does they matter they can learn how to pack and pack for not just themselves but also others including the FTJs. The club is now hosting regular packing courses so no excuses in not learning. Were also expecting this increase to motivate more students to pack for themselves, and this can only be good from both a safety and logistics point of view (no more waiting for the packer to get your rig ready). Lastly, what about those people who pack merely to receive an income and take this away (non jumpers)? In this case were requiring anyone who packs at the club to be a club member - an appropriate membership amount will be charged for these people which will in effect reduce any gain from this increase and move it over to the club i.e. all of us. There you have it. Theres a bit more history and a lot more thinking and debating that has gone into this issue but for the sake of this email I will not delve into it any further - feel free to pick my brain when you see me. The bottom line is weve decided to fix the packing price to the jump ticket at a ratio of 6.5 to start off, though we will very likely reduce this ratio should we see the desired effects. The new pricing will take effect on the 1st of July 2014, theres a packing course coming up this weekend, get packing... :-)
