For the next week Im going to be working on a project with a deadline so Im going to be away from the computer much of the time. Ill try to post as best I can. Today I thought I would post some pictures of Union Pacific Engine #480 that I took while on vacation. We stopped at a park in North Platte, NE one morning and I saw this small 2-8-0 Consolidation type locomotive off in a corner. As you can see the years have taken there toll, but I have certainly seen steam locomotives in far worse condition. You can see that the folks in North Platte are certainly making an effort to preserve the little 2-8-0. According to the sign posted in front of the small locomotive #480 was built in 1903 for freight service at a cost of $16,483. It first worked out of Laramie, WY until it was replaced by larger engines and transferred to North Platte, NE. It was also noted that the locomotive was hand fired. I think the Vanderbilt Tender is pretty cool. #480 was donated to the people of North Platte by the Union Pacific Railroad on February 15, 1956. While I certainly like large steam locomotives, I also admire the smaller ones. The small locomotives sometimes are more suited to our needs on a model railroad. Hope youre having a good day. Bo
