For the past few decades, many of the top software and technology companies in Silicon Valley have been calling for immigration reforms to allow them to hire foreign computer gurus to fill open engineering jobs. After all, the U.S. has an engineering shortage, right? Not necessarily. A recent study concluded that the supposed shortage of high-skilled engineers in the U.S. may be overstated. The study revealed that within the 10 top jobs requesting H-1B visas, only three do not have enough qualified American jobseekers. Why are so many tech CEOs trying to increase the number of foreign software engineers in their companies? How does hiring domestic engineers differ from hiring international engineers?
