For the past four years Doug has represented Ward 2 on city council (after — sound familiar? — his little brother handed off the seat). But it’s difficult to think of any major or worthwhile initiative that Doug Ford managed to launch. There’s only his absurd 2011 push to install a monorail, mega-mall and giant Ferris wheel on Toronto’s waterfront, along with massive condo expansion. That potential catastrophe was blocked by outraged city councillors in an early instance of the Ford administration losing control of the political agenda. It’s hardly an encouraging record on which to run for mayor. As for Rob Ford’s quest to regain his Ward 2 seat, it would probably be best for his health — and certainly best for the public — if he lost. All of Ford’s personal flaws and failures, including his vile record of racist, homophobic and misogynistic statements, render him unfit to serve as a city councillor, never mind as mayor. Voters should give both Ford brothers the boot. Neither deserves a continued role in Toronto’s public life.
