For the serious student of dressage, feeling secure poses a complex problem. Given that learning never ends and the field of dressage offers endless possibilities, the secure feeling of knowing dressage is most obviously an illusion. How then do we deal with our feelings of expertise and mastery? The confidence which gives us relief from uncertainty with the horse always has a hole in it. Can you find the hole? To locate this spot of unknowing is the certainty of your own sanity and mental health. It is also the certainty of your skill and knowledge growing. Do not fear being the fool. Rest in your certainty briefly and then press on. Mastery is not just mindfulness of the detail and resourcefulness in the work. It is finding the hole, living there, and willing to move beyond to the next hole. The best dressage has no certainty. It is full of surprise. Fall in love with the process because you can master the process but you will never really master the subject or the horse. Mastery at its best is relative.
