For this week’s Music Matters Suzy Klein headed to Cairo to meet musicians and cultural activists, and find out how Egypt is forging a new cultural identity in 2013. Recorded in a climate of upheaval and protest that climaxed with the deposition of President Mohammed Morsi, Suzy hears how Egyptian cultural identity not only spans 7000 years of history, but includes Pharaonic, Arabic, Coptic and Western Classical music, and that musicians today are taking to the street to defend this plurality of cultural expression. Suzy speaks to Nayer Nagui, conductor of the Cairo Opera Orchestra, journalist Ati Metwaly, now-deposed Culture Minister Alaa Abdel Aziz, cultural activist Basma El Husseiny, members of the Institude of Coptic Studies, oud player and archivist Mustafa Said, young composer Bahaa El Ansary and musician and curator Mahmoud Refat. Listen this Saturday at 12.15pm on BBC Radio 3 bbc.co.uk/programmes/b036hz8v
