For those of us growing up in the 80s, Robocop was the action movie that made kids around the world pretend to jerk-walk like a robot from the couch to the dining table. The idea for the film came to writer Edward Neumeier when he walked past a poster of the movie Blade Runner. He asked his friend Michael Miner what it was about, and his friend replied, Its about a cop hunting robots. The two of them eventually co-wrote the script, and got the backing of a high-ranking studio executive after being stranded together for a few hours at the airport due to a delayed flight. Robocop was released in 1987 to positive reviews from critics, and is considered by many as one of the best films of 1987. It had violence that was at that time considered to be over the top, with scenes of gory executions, toxic acid melting a characters face, and even a close-up of Robocops neural spike piercing through the main villains neck. RoboCop was nominated for Academy Awards for Film Editing and for Best Sound, won the Academy Award for Sound Effects Editing, and had critics debating for years the many breakthroughs in its production. For the rest of us, all we remember about the movie... was the Robocop suit.
