For those of you that missed last night’s announcement there - TopicsExpress

For those of you that missed last night’s announcement there will be a Project Brainstorming session this Sunday (11/24/13) at 1:00 PM in Olson 118. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a synthetic biology lab project. You will get to give input on a project you would like to work on, and you might learn something fun and new! ______________________________________________________ Some things to think about before you show up: 1.) What problem am I trying to solve? a.) Ex: Bio-fuels, diagnosis disease, etc. 2. How will I solve that problem? a.) Ex: how many different parts will my device need (signaling proteins, receptor proteins, transcription factors, etc.)? 3.) Is there any research that supports what I want to do? a.) Ex: If I want to find a protein that interacts with lactose (a sugar) I could enter lactose receptor in Google scholar. 4.) Is there a potential for dual-use? Can my device or parts of my device harm people and/or the environment? How would we minimize/ reduce the risk of miss-use of my device? a.) Ex: Cancer targeting device could be tuned to kill non-cancerous cells. We can reduce the risk of miss-use by adding a switch that causes the device to destroy itself ~2 hours after it is removed from storage. 5.) Most importantly, why is it cool? ________________________________________________________ We’ve attached the club’s lab project protocols at the link below if you want more information about how the lab process will work: https://drive.google/a/ucdavis.edu/file/d/0B2zyrXoLJ2umZ1BlNENhUjZSbWs/edit?usp=sharing
