This allows them to use additives to enhance their performance whereas Group 3 petroleum base stocks rely heavily on additives to bandaid their shortcomings. When choosing an oil you want your volatility Below 8% and the TBN above 12.0. You also want a higher Zinc, Boron and Molybdenum content.
