For those of you who do not have diabetes, do you know when your blood sugar is low? I dont have diabetes but I know when my blood sugar is low as I get a bit shaky, crabby and sick to my stomach. An average persons blood sugar ranges between 80-120. Addison is hypoglycemic unaware which means that she does not recognize when she is low. Due to her being hypoglycemic unaware, she wears a continuous glucose monitor which can tell us what her blood sugar is throughout the day. The only problem is that the CGM only reads every 5 minutes, so if her blood sugar is dropping fast, the CGM cant keep up with it which is why its important to test her blood sugar throughout the day. Addison said to me in the car today she didnt feel good. I figured she had just gotten done with a field trip and so she was a bit tired and it was lunch time so she was probably hungry. We walked into the house and she was acting normal , jumping on her brother and chasing him around the house telling him she loved him(see the first picture below). I had her wash her hands to do her blood sugar and imagine my surprise as it said 36. She had none of the typical low blood sugar signs that you would think someone with that dangerously low blood sugar would have and her CGM said she was 109. I did her blood sugar again to double check and it said 42 so I immediately gave her juice to bring it up. Now I know that someday she will be able to feel that low feeling, but until then I have to watch out for her well being which means testing her blood sugar many many times throughout the day. It is so hard to tell of she is low as sometimes she acts like a normal 4 year old, while other times she can be in the fetal position on the floor. Today she had a very scary low and I didnt catch it. I am upset with myself because I didnt catch it before it got that low but I am happy that she recovered from it just fine. She looked up at me with a smile while drinking her juice and said its ok mom, Ill feel better after juice. She is always looking for the bright side of things. :)
