For those of you who do not know, Singapore tried to mandate or encourage spontaneity among its citizens some time back - in 2002 and 2005, in fact. It prompted the Straits Times, in 2002, to say: The Singapore government has decided that the people shall be more spontaneous. And in 2005, then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong gushed about the prospects: If we are to encourage a derring-do society, we must allow some risk-taking and a little excitement. In fact, so changed is our mind-set that we will even allow reverse bungee. Yes, reverse bungee! Dont play play. Not sure how well that reverse-bungee thingy is doing nowadays, though. Ha! But really, how spontaneous have we become since then? When someone recently tried to be spontaneous - and generous - in sharing his TV with others to watch the World Cup, the police closed in and shut it down. Maybe we have to wait for the top to order us to be spontaneous before we kay-kiang (take our own initiative) again.
