For those of you who have been hearing about the 6.5 quake that hit New Zealand yesterday: The epicenter was in the strait between the north and south islands, about 35 miles southwest of Wellington. We felt it here in Christchurch which is remarkable considering we are several hundred miles away. Strong shaking was felt in Wellington, and some minor damage has been reported. For now, all we are hearing about is disruptions to the power grid and they are suspending rail services until they can inspect the tracks. No word yet on if we will be expanding our Christchurch work to include Wellington, but we are down here if they need us.
