For those of you who like interesting little weather facts, we had a high temperature of only 79F this past Tuesday. So far for 2015, that is the coldest high temperature. This happened only 4 times in 2014. When looking through our unofficial records back to 1956 (a little more than 21000 days), only 162 days have had high temperatures less than 80F! Thats only 0.76% of the days. You might think we would have had a near record low temperature, but the low temp that night was a lackluster 76F. The dense overhead clouds and rain during the day kept the temperatures lowered, but at night, the clouds actually helped to keep the heat at the surface--acting like a blanket to reflect long-wave radiation from the earth back toward the surface. Our coldest low temperatures occur on nights in which there is very little cloud cover and little-to-no wind. This allows solar radiation absorbed by the earth during the day to get emitted back into space as long-wave radiation overnight. Fortunately, we dont expect another similarly cold day for a little while, so feel free put those coats back in the closet.
